Referee Courses
Trainee Referee Program
Our Trainee Officials start their refereeing journey by attending a BWA affiliated Association Beginner Referee course. The WBA in partnership with JBRA run multiple Association Beginner Referee courses over the year and encourage our officials to attend our course as we modify the information to relate to our domestic competitions.
After completion of this course, trainees will have real game experience during our Junior Domestic Competition held at either Mater Dei College or Lake Joondalup Baptist College on Saturdays for roughly six weeks.
Each official is paired with an experienced Level 1 Referee during these games to help guide them through their sign offs to becoming a qualified WBA official. Once you have been signed off by a Referee Instructor, you can order your Green Basketball Australia Referee shirt and be able to referee for the WBA Junior Domestic Competition at one of our various venues on a Saturday.
The next course date is yet to be determined
Level 1 Referee Course
After you have held an Association Beginner Referee accreditation for 12 months and are at least 15 years old, you can register for a BWA affiliated Level 1 Referee Course. The WBA run two Level 1 Courses per year and encourage our officials to attend our course as we modify the information to relate to our competitions.
After attending this course, each official must complete two successful on-court assessments by a current BWA Level 1 Referee Coach and be approved for promotion by the WBA Competitions and Referees Coordinator.
Level 1 Referees must receive their successful on-court assessments on Friday night Junior Domestic games as the level of the game must be at a standard that BWA permits. Once you have been approved for promotion, you can order your BWA Black and White Referee shirt and referee any of our Junior Domestic Competition games, as well as our Senior Domestic Competition.
The next course is planned for March 24th 2024
Association Referee Coach Course
After you have held a Level 1 Referee accreditation for at least 12 months and are turning 16, you may attend the Association Referee Coach Course. By attending the theory session and completing the required material, you will become a Trainee Referee Instructor and On Court Runner at the WBA. After you have been assessed by the Competitions and Referee Coordinator, you will be promoted to a Referee Instructor.
The next course is being held on the 9th of November 2023.
