Getting Started
See below about why you should play basketball, as well as the different ways you can play at the WBA!
Why play Basketball?
Basketball is a welcoming, inclusive sport that is suitable for players, coaches, and officials of all ages, genders, and abilities. As a team sport, basketball helps encourage younger players to develop teamwork and leadership skills, as well as improving their confidence and self-esteem. Basketball is one of the most popular and fastest growing sports in WA.
There are great pathways in basketball to suit all participants, whatever your ability, gender, or age. At the Wanneroo Basketball Association, you can represent a Domestic Club on a local level, or our Association on a state-wide level. Basketball is a year-round indoor sport with games played in indoor stadiums without the worries of inclement weather or harsh temperatures.
Whatever level of basketball you wish to achieve, we have programs, teams, and opportunities that will provide you with the best possible experience to get the most out of your time at the WBA.
Participation/Introductory Programs
We run a number of introductory programs designed to make learning to play basketball fun, safe, and easy for beginners. For players 10 years and under, we offer Aussie Hoops. Aussie Hoops is Basketball Australia’s official introductory program, providing a fun and inclusive Basketball experience for 5–10-year-olds that serves as an introduction to a lifetime of involvement in the game. In addition to promoting healthy and active lifestyles, the program serves as a platform for social development and inclusion, fostering stronger and more vibrant communities and individuals.
Aussie Hoops has been designed into a three staged program to ensure that for each age group, participants are participating in activities and games that are relevant to their physical and mental capabilities which will increase in competitiveness until participants are ready to transition into local club competitions.
Through adaptive introductory programs such as Aussie Hoops, ‘Skill, Fun and Play’ and Bulla Hoop Time, children will be provided with the best possible learning and playing experience to develop a positive introduction to the sport of basketball, ensuring enjoyment and continued participation.

Junior Competitions
Your first experience with organised basketball competitions may be playing for a local domestic club with one of our Domestic Clubs across the Wanneroo and Joondalup areas. Domestic basketball is a fantastic way to develop your skills and improve as a player on the way to representative basketball and beyond. It is also a fun outlet for participation and socialisation, and a great way to make new friends.
The Wanneroo Basketball Association runs junior competitions for our affiliated domestic clubs. We have seven clubs that stretch from Duncraig in the south to Two Rocks in the north. The clubs are their own entities with separate fee structures, training days and venues, and uniform requirements.

While the majority of divisions focus on the more social side of the sport, we also have divisions for those who wish to take things a little more serious. We offer men’s and women’s leagues, as well as a mixed competition.
